Billie Eilish is slowly but surely becoming the master of disguise. Last year, when she traded her then-signature green ombré ‘do for blonde hair temporarily, the artist admitted that she wore a wig for six weeks — including to the Grammys — to hide it from the public. Now, she’s revealed another one of her stealthy dupes and we’s still processing it how great it is. Yep, friends, Billie Eilish used a whole body double during her set at Coachella 2022… and nobody noticed.
Back in April, when Billie kicked off her headlining Coachella set, it wasn’t actually her standing on stage — at least not during her intro sequence.
“[At] the beginning of Coachella, I had a body double, one of my dancers from the show,” Billie admitted during a recent interview with Apple Music 1’s Matt Wilkinson. “I dressed her up in a show look that I had worn before. We got a black wig and we put buns in it and we gave her a mask and sunglasses and she wore my shoes and my socks.”
“I put her up at the back of the stage and she stood there while the lights went on and everybody thought it was me,” Billie continued. “Nobody ever knew it wasn’t me, literally nobody knew. And while she’s up there, I put on a big black coat and like a traffic vest and a hood and just glasses. And I walked through the crowd, all the way out to the end of the thrust [stage]. Got under the thrust, took it all off, and got on and started the show. It worked!”
Billie was also asked if she had gone incognito to watch other artists’ sets at festivals she’s performed at, which she has — but the singer says those disguises didn’t work as well. “I’ve done it though occasionally in different places, and it’s really nice when you’re able to do it,” she added.
Back in 2020, Billie had already opened up about wearing a disguise to dinner with a friend as “an experiment” in a video interview with Vogue and her sentiments were not as positive then. “To go get dinner is like kind of a hassle now because all of these things are involved, so I was like, why don’t I try to disguise myself? So I put on a wig; I put on just a hoodie and a little bow on my head and some jeans and I went out — and I hated it. I hated it. I hated it. It’s so f*cked up. I just didn’t like it,” Billie said at the time.
Billie has since also talked about her experiences being recognized in public more earnestly, too. In 2021, she said her decision to go blonde was partly inspired by that very reason. “I couldn’t go anywhere with [my green] hair because it was so obviously me. I wanted anonymity,” she said at the time. “I went to a park with a friend, and I was like, ‘No, I can’t take off my hood!’ I was terrified of the paparazzi and these stalkers I’ve had. But my friend was like, ‘Don’t worry: You’re okay. Nothing’s gonna happen.’ And I took my hood off, and I felt like a new person.”
