JoJo Siwa said goodbye to her signature ponytail in April 2022, ending an era of super tightly-pulled back ponytails festooned with bows and glitter. While the ponytail might now be replaced by a cute cropped cut, the Dance Moms star does have a reminder of her roots — literally.

Recently, JoJo took to TikTok to explain the origins of her bald spot, and spoiler alert, it isn’t actually the ponytail’s fault. “When someone notices my bald spot and asks where it’s from,” JoJo posted on TikTok on July 27, flipping the camera to show off the small section of hair near her temple where no hair is currently growing.

She then flashes to a series of photos of her younger self on Dance Moms looking emotional and stressed, revealing that the culprit for the bald spot wasn’t the tight ponytails but a stress rash instead.

After some confusion from fans regarding the bald spot and its root cause, JoJo posted another video further explaining why she lost her hair in that small spot. “When I was little I had a really bad stress rash right here on Dance Moms and I would pick at it all day long and I damaged every single hair follicle that has ever been there,” she shared. “So now I’m carrying her love with me… right there.”

JoJo may be missing some hair, but that doesn’t stop her from experimenting with her look. She’s been having fun playing with her cropped cut as of late and tried out lots of different styles during her stint on Dancing with the Stars and beyond.

When she initially ditched the quintessential JoJo Siwa bow that often accompanied the pony, she told Kelly Clarkson that it was time to move on. “She’s just on vacation. A long vacation,” JoJo told the host. “I love my bow and I always will. It’s a piece of my life [but] I’ve had a lot of fun exploring with my hair. Every day I do something fun with it.”
