Before they were global superstars — actors, musicians, and social media icons alike — Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato were just two little kids in line at a Barney audition. Selena recently shared that she’ll “never forget” the moment she met Demi, who would go on to become a fellow Disney star and an on-and-off close friend.
While recently appearing on The Hollywood Reporter‘s “Awards Chatter” podcast in support of the upcoming season of her Hulu series Only Murders in the Building, Selena reminisced on her child stardom, including the moment she met Demi. According to Selena, there were nearly 1,500 kids at her first audition for the Barney crew and seven were picked, including herself and Demi.
“The wildest part of that story is that she was actually the girl standing in front of me,” Selena shared of their meeting. (Demi uses they/she pronouns.) “I remember she had a red bow on, I’ll never forget it. I just thought the world of her. And we both ended up, after we got the part, we didn’t know if the other one did. And we just had this, like, mini reunion when we saw each other.”
Demi and Selena aren’t as close today; in 2020, Demi told Harper’s Bazaar that they had grown apart. “When you grow up with somebody, you’re always going to have love for them. But I’m not friends with her… I will always have love for her, and I wish everybody nothing but the best.”
After joining the Barney cast for two seasons, Selena went on to join another iconic childhood franchise, the Disney Channel, and shot to stardom as the lead on Wizards of Waverly Place. However, when the popular show ended in 2012, Selena had a hard time transitioning into more grown-up roles. “I felt like it was very difficult for people to take me seriously,” she shared on THR‘s podcast. “I have slowly pushed through that, and I’m really glad, but it was very frustrating. I felt like a joke, you know?”
Selena has since found her niche as an actor, musician, beauty mogul, and chef-in-the-making. She’s just wrapped Season 2 of OMITB and is gearing up for Season 4 of her HBO Max show Selena + Chef, and is now back in the studio working on new music. (Yay!) “So basically we’re going to be just working on new music. Like I said, I couldn’t do one or the other,” Selena told THR of her future career plans, and balancing acting and music. “I actually love both.”
