Over the last two weekends, music really took over Barcelona with the 20th edition of the Primavera Sound Festival. Celebrating two decades of live music, the event congregated an average of 80,000 attendees per day, who braved the heat and crowds to enjoy their favorite artists — and Teen Vogue was there for Weekend 2.
People from all walks of life flocked to the Spanish coastal city to relish a truly diverse lineup with acts spanning hyper pop, indie rock, trap, hip-hop, reggeaton, and more as well as secondary events sprinkled across the city of Barcelona. As far as headliners go, on Thursday, Dua Lipa literally sent moons and lips to the crowd (in the form of balloons, of course) and even brought out Angèle on stage to sing “Fever.” The same day, Tyler, The Creator transformed the stage into his own theatre, using video and lighting to captivate the audience like only he can. On Friday, Lorde followed suit and, this time, she did let the crowd sing along; as did The Strokes, who took to the stage after having to cancel last week’s performance due to COVID.
Closing off the festival’s 20th-anniversary edition, its biggest in history, were Jorja Smith, Tame Impala, Phoenix, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Megan Thee Stallion, who took the chance to speak up on abortion rights not once but twice during her festival duties. (She also touched upon the topic during a smaller set earlier in the week at Barcelona’s Razzmatazz venue).
But even beyond the headliners, Primavera truly brought out some gems. Mura Masa, a last-minute addition to the lineup after Tainy’s cancelation, surprised with one of the most enjoyable sets of the weekend in tandem with Fliss. Jhay Cortez gave Latin music the spotlight it deserved at the Tous stage, and Cazzu waved the flag for Argentinian trap.
Of course, a diverse lineup is going to be represented by a diverse audience. Festival fashion has come a long way and Primavera Sound was perhaps the perfect proof. Attendees prioritized comfort (the sets lasted until six in the morning alas) but mixed in the hottest trends in their casual ensembles. The street style favored everything from Crocs to Air Force 1s and mesh to monochrome. Below, Teen Vogue caught up with 15 Primavera Sound festival-goers to snap their ‘fits and learn about their favorite acts.
