If we’re being totally honest, this psychological horror movie, from Iranian-born writer and director Babak Anvari, is maybe the best movie on this list. Seriously, it’s that good. Taking place during the Iran-Iraq war, it tells the story of a mother, Shideh (Narges Rashidi), her young daughter, Dorsa (Avin Manshadi), and a mysterious evil force that seems to have taken up residence within the family’s missile-torn apartment building — and potentially, it seems, also within Dorsa. The whole movie is in Persian, but assuming you’re someone who does need subtitles, we’re here to assure you they’re well worth it.

Another Roald Dahl-spun fable for the win, we’re pretty sure any list of classic Halloween movies wouldn’t be complete without The Witches on it. And, no offense to Anne Hathaway in the 2020 remake, but there’s only one Grand High Witch as far as we’re concerned: Anjelica Huston. In other words, go straight for the original. It was also the last movie that Jim Henson worked on before his death, and the props and puppetry in this are truly too good.
