In case you missed it, Ariana unveiled her very own beauty brand back in November. Named r.e.m. Beauty, the line encompasses multiple makeup and skin categories. Earlier this year, the collection made its Ulta debut.
Many of her items have caught on with fans and the beauty community, but one r.e.m. lip oil has garnered additional attention for its name. Multiple fans on TikTok and social media theorize that “Pickin’ Petals,” a shade of the peachy pink Essential Drip Lip Oil was named in honor of Mac.
The theory stems from a line in the duo’s collaborative single “The Way.” Featured on Ariana’s debut album, “The Way” includes the lyrics: “Say, I’m thinking ’bout her every second, every hour/Do my singing in the shower/Picking petals off the flowers like/Do she love me, do she love me not?”
Ariana hasn’t confirmed the theory or the inspiration behind the lip oil’s name, but social media can’t help but speculate. “STOP the lip oil is called pickin petals like mac says in the way,” one user tweeted, adding a TikTok video that explored the theory. “I just saw someone say that ari named one of her lip oils “pickin petals” after mac miller and i’m sobbing,” another Twitter user wrote.
TikTok users are also exploring the possible connection, creating videos soundtracked by the single. “When you get the r.e.m. beauty lip oil in “pickin petals” and realize ari keeps dropping us little reminders of Mac,” wrote this creator.
Ariana and Mac certainly had a special relationship, and it wouldn’t be entirely out of the question for the singer to honor Mac through her work. Fans previously theorized that the sound of crickets, which were featured on Ari’s track “Positions” was a nod to Mac’s posthumously released single “Crickets.” That theory also remained unconfirmed, but with each of her projects, fans have found possible connections to Mac.
