The royal family, world leaders, and celebrities have taken to social media to mourn Queen Elizabeth II, who died on Thursday at the age of 96. According to a statement released by the Royal Family on September 8, the Queen passed away “peacefully” at Balmoral Castle in Scotland surrounded by her loved ones.

The news of the Queen’s death came only hours after she was placed under medical supervision by her doctors after they became “concerned” for her health. The British monarch was immediately succeeded by her son and heir Charles, who is 73.

“The death of my beloved Mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family,” reads a statement by King Charles III, released by the Royal Family. “We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much-loved Mother. I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world. During this period of mourning and change, my family and I will be comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which The Queen was so widely held.”

UK Prime Minister Liz Truss

Just on Tuesday, September 6, Queen Elizabeth appointed Liz Truss as the new prime minister of the United Kingdom. “Queen Elizabeth II was the rock on which modern Britain was built. Our country has grown and flourished under her reign,” wrote PM Truss in a statement. “It is a day of great loss, but Queen Elizabeth II leaves a great legacy. God save the King.”
