Preoperative SADI-S Diet

The SADI-S diet helps shrink the liver and reduces fat in the abdomen, which safely prepares the patient for a successful surgery.

A preoperative SADI-S diet includes:

  • Weeks 1 and 2: For the first week, patients should stick to clear liquids only, such as water, non-acidic juices, and non-fat broths. During the second week, patients can include more nourishing liquids, such as skim milk, protein shakes, and low-fat soups.
  • Weeks 3 and 4: Patients can begin eating pureed foods, such as finely ground fruits, vegetables, or egg whites. Patients should continue to prioritize a high-protein diet that is low in carbohydrates, fats, and calories.
  • Week 5: Patients should continue to eat a high-protein diet, but they may try incorporating more solid foods at this stage.
  • Week 6: At this point, most patients can return to eating solid foods.

After SADI-S surgery, patients should always avoid carbonated beverages, fast food, and foods high in carbohydrates, fat, and calories. Patients should also eat mindfully, which means choosing nutrient-dense foods, chewing slowly, and drinking plenty of water between meals.
