Valentino Made Zendaya’s Emmys Dress in Just One Week

ICYMI: Zendaya made history at the 2022 Emmys. Not only did the superstar become the youngest two-time winner of the Outstanding Lead Actress award, but she also became the first Black woman to receive two wins in the category — and consecutively at that. But, even before snagging her award, Zendaya was already winning the style game.

Dressed in a Valentino ballgown that featured a peplum bodice and a full skirt, the star paired the glamorous look with a voluminous hairstyle courtesy of celebrity hairstylist Tony Medina. Unsurprisingly, when the Euphoria star hit the Emmys red carpet, she absolutely stole the spotlight. What is truly surprising, however, is that the custom-made dress that Zendaya wore for the historic night was designed and made in just about a week.

Zendaya’s longtime stylist Law Roach shared with Vogue that Valentino had previously designed three dresses specifically for the occasion but none of them was the one. Instead, the design that Zendaya ended up wearing to the award ceremony came to Roach in a dream. Yes, you read it right, in a dream. “I woke up in the middle of the night and called Valentino, asking them to make this new dress,” Roach told Vogue. “It was the last dress we tried on, and I have to give a huge thanks to that team. Those women work so hard, and everything is done by hand.”

Roach also explained that the inspiration for the gown came from screen and runway icons Grace Kelly and Linda Evangelista. “We took inspiration from Grace Kelly and Old Hollywood movies. Zendaya and I were also really inspired by Valentino’s fall 1987 collection. There was a red dress that Linda Evangelista wore in an editorial, and we took inspiration from the bodice of the dress — but we made it black and the skirt a lot bigger.”

This is not the first time Zendaya and Law Roach are inspired by the legendary supermodel. Back in January, the star plucked an archive piece from Valentino’s 1992 collection to attend the premiere of Euphoria‘s second season. The piece, a vertically striped black and white dress, had been originally sported by Linda Evangelista on the runway of the maison’s Spring/Summer show.
