Velma Is Officially Gay, and Hayley Kiyoko Had the Best Reaction

If you’ve been a fan of Hayley Kiyoko for a while, then you probably know she played Velma Dinkley in Scooby-Doo! The Mystery Begins and Scooby-Doo! Curse of the Lake Monster on Cartoon Network. And if you’re a long-time fan of Scooby-Doo, then you’d also know a new animated movie recently came out — and it officially has Hayley’s stamp of approval for a very heartwarming reason.

Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo!, which premiered on October 4, is one of the first movies of the franchise to feature a canonically lesbian Velma. The character, which has historically been regarded as queer-coded, includes a scene from the new movie where we get visual, indisputable confirmation that Velma is indeed a lesbian. (As them. notes, this isn’t the first time it has been explicitly stated that Velma is gay outside of the screen, but it is one of the more obvious examples on-screen.)

A clip of the scene in question began circulating on Twitter shortly after the movie came out. In it, we see an immediately-flustered Velma develop a serious, “big-time” crush on villain and fashion designer Coco Diablo. “OMG LESBIAN VELMA FINALLY CANON CANON IN THE MOVIES LETS GOOOOOO,” the user who posted the clip, which has at the time of writing surpassed five million views, wrote in their caption.
